When driving at night, and if you see police lights flashing behind you,
DO NOT pull over right there on the highway, or any unpopulated area.
Turn on your Emergency Flashers, drive at normal speed, and go to the first public area where people are around. Even if it is several miles before the next exit, do not pull over until you get to the exit and get to where there are people.
It has been reported that criminals are using fake police lights in or on their vehicle. The unsuspecting driver thinks it is a police car pulling them over, they can't see the car itself because it is dark, all they can actually see are the police lights flashing, so they pull over on the highway in the dark. This gives the criminal the perfect opportunity to rob and/or murder their victim, and nobody can see them. It is very easy for them to keep a "look out" for someone coming because they will see the headlights in plenty of time to make their get-away.
The police are aware of this problem, when you turn on your Emergency Flashers, and drive at a normal speed, if it is truly a police officer, they will know that you are aware that they are behind you, and they will know that you are intending to pull over at the first populated area.
